1st Sunday Sermon 2019
hey hey coach Tim Sunday sermon we’re
0:09way overdue I wanted to show you
0:11something of that I am nothing like him
0:15oh here’s just pointing out there come
0:18on I wanted to point out something to
0:23you that is interesting it’s it’s come
0:27from a lifetime of study of uber
0:32successful athletes and it matters to us
0:37as businesspeople also it’s just that in
0:39the business world we don’t often get
0:43the truth on why people are successful
0:46and the reason is this Elon Musk is not
0:48going to tell you why it’s successful he
0:50doesn’t first of all it probably doesn’t
0:51know and then second of all he’s not
0:57going to give up any any advantages to
1:01his competition so you can get some of
1:04his reasons for success some of his
1:07beliefs etc but I think most people who
1:12study this stuff would agree that most
1:14uber successful people have some sort of
1:18thing in their past that there’s they’re
1:21trying to prove out that they are there
1:26they’re trying to heal some paint
1:27they’re running away from something and
1:29towards something but also away from
1:32something I’ll give you an example the
1:39other day I read an article where this
1:43football player plays for the Houston
1:45Texans grew up typical you know
1:50inner-city story you know the
1:55grandparents in jail or whatever or
1:58uncle’s in jail dad dead single parent
2:00tons of kids etc and to this guy’s
2:05credit he decides he will manifest his
2:12potential
2:13shall we say through football not a
2:17great physical guy as they said in the
2:20article it wasn’t anything special as
2:22far as that he’s not gonna break any
2:24world records for speed but he’s a good
2:26athlete he’s not in the NFL unless he’s
2:30a good athlete but there’s better he’s
2:35been in trouble off and on quite a bit
2:38actually I think you for getting in
2:41trouble for a substance abuse and then
2:43so they go back to his beginnings and he
2:48said he wanted to prove to his mother
2:52that she should still want him now
2:58imagine growing up with that kind of
3:00psychology something is seriously
3:04screwed up somewhere right
3:06so that’s devastating what I’m here to
3:14tell you that that is your disadvantage
3:18when you’re up against people like that
3:20it’s almost like the person has nothing
3:24else to lose right I’m gonna go you know
3:28the movie I’m gonna go in I got nothing
3:30else to lose man and they’re just they
3:32don’t care if they get killed
3:33they’re got nothing else to lose so they
3:36go you know that burn the the boat sort
3:39of so to speak
3:41that’s our disadvantage when we grew up
3:43in you know a happy town USA and we were
3:48raised by parents you know no one’s
3:50perfect but a we’re raised in a happy
3:53family even if it’s one parent there was
3:55a community around from family to the
4:00the real community the church community
4:02or the school community or the town
4:04community full of great mentors great
4:07role models that would make sure that
4:10this this kid does well and is as I
4:14liked the joke when I talk about this
4:15they they are on their way on that
4:17Maslow’s hierarchy right they they’re
4:19getting it and so psychologically and
4:25this is the think about this
4:27the more successful people in sports or
4:30in in football are the ones that are a
4:33little twist and I would say this is why
4:38we see this with really uber successful
4:42people in in other industries it’s just
4:45that sports are more transparent and so
4:48I think we’re able to get better better
4:52studies done through them than through
4:56studying business people and trying to
5:00role model ass actresses and and
5:04musicians there excuse me I’m getting
5:08over a cold
5:11the there was a study a few years back I
5:18can’t remember I try to try to find it
5:21because I think it’s so telling but they
5:23studied people that have made it to the
5:26top of the charts and music and what
5:29they found was a lot of them thought
5:32that they were at the pinnacle of their
5:36profession because God wanted them them
5:39to be and I’ve always found that a
5:41little bit crazy like praying for a win
5:47right because God wants you to win other
5:50than than the other team so I’ve always
5:56thought that a bit crazy and
5:57superstitious but the advantage goes to
6:03the crazy and that’s the point so having
6:08to go against that is going to require a
6:14belief system that is is missing a
6:20little bit of social proof built into it
6:22or a little bit of psychological damage
6:25as our in the case of our football
6:26player built into it how do you go
6:29against that and it it takes a lot of
6:33mental strength for somebody who is
6:36balanced right they said we want to
6:40balance
6:41lifestyle well people who are uber
6:44successful oftentimes aren’t very
6:46balanced so you know if you want to be
6:50great at business and not getting 12
6:52divorces we need to be more
6:56psychologically balanced and and I still
7:01think yeah the the psychologically
7:03balanced guy can make it into the NFL
7:07it’s just they need to to build in
7:12motivations that are not as typical and
7:18easy frankly I mean I’m not saying you
7:21know thinking you need to prove to your
7:24mom that you’re wanted is easy but it’s
7:27a it’s a lethal motivator and whenever
7:31he was gonna point himself into he was
7:34going to get there 100 miles an hour
7:36because that’s a hell of a motivator or
7:39thinking a deity wants you to be
7:41successful I can’t let down the deity
7:44can I so what are you going to do to
7:48build in these these propulsions that
7:54others have naturally how do you create
8:00them yourselves yourself and then build
8:03in another advantage that some of these
8:07people have like if a deity you know you
8:09you look at your church and they’re
8:11social proof social proof is basically
8:13lots of others that are saying the same
8:18thing essentially essentially a an
8:21agreed upon reality and so you look at
8:24your church and the Church of sin yet
8:26God wants you to succeed oh there’s my
8:29proof as long as I buy into that and
8:31believe that so what are you going to do
8:33buy into the belief if you believe in
8:36God do you believe well believe then
8:37that God wants you to be successful and
8:40if you have a hard time thinking you
8:43know whoa
8:46doesn’t anyone everybody be successful
8:48well then just accept that he wants
8:51everybody to be successful
8:53why not and maybe the other people just
8:59aren’t accepting it and hey if you’re
9:02gonna be altruistic go help them accept
9:04it also but then going on a different
9:06tangent anyway so think about that how
9:09can you build in drivers there’s lots of
9:11ways
9:12lots of my podcasts deal with exactly
9:16that but understand what you’re up
9:19against that is what any kid is up
9:22against a lot of there’s a lot of kids
9:26with a lot of talent that are coming up
9:28going to getting scholarships and going
9:31in the NFL and I’ll bet you dollars to
9:34donuts that a lot of them got a chip on
9:38their shoulder and got something that
9:40they’re pissed off about and and that’s
9:44a big driver it’s not very
9:46psychologically healthy it’s also why a
9:48lot of them don’t get very successful
9:51once they leave the NFL they’re lost but
9:55that’s a different podcast a this coach
9:57Tim out hopefully this has been helpful
9:59this has been the Sunday sermon
