Goal Setting to Never Be Present
Often times people get lost in goal setting and either get stuck when it is achieved. Or are so busy in the future they are not in the here and now where things get done.
This also can lead people and teams to want to win at all costs while forgetting or not even creating the internal states or values that they hold dear.
Coach James Franklin at 6:30 discusses goal setting for his Penn State football team with Dan Patrick.
I would combat this temptation for a player to play for the scoreboard by asking them :
How Many plays in a game?
“60 Coach!”
Which one is the most important one?
“This one Coach!”
I still will ask my kids whom have gone and played high school these kinds of questions to test how well it stuck. Most have to think about it for a split second before it comes back. Mission accomplished.
